A standing exchange during training at BTT Merritt Island
Takedowns, chain wrestling and top control

Wrestling

Wrestling is the part most jiu-jitsu players are missing. Level changes, shots, sprawls, chain wrestling and the scrambles in between — the skills that decide who ends up on top, and that make everything else you do easier.

Who it is for

Is this you?

  • Jiu-jitsu players who keep getting taken down
  • Anyone who wants to choose where the fight happens
  • Kids and teens who wrestle at school and want extra mat time
  • MMA students building the middle of their game

What to bring

  • Shorts and a rash guard
  • Knee pads if you have them
  • A water bottle
  • Wrestling shoes are optional — most train barefoot

What a session looks like

An hour on the mat

01

Stance and motion

Where your feet go before anything else happens. Unglamorous, and the reason good wrestlers look effortless.

02

Attack of the day

One entry — a single, a double, a snap — drilled from stationary to moving to live.

03

Defense

Sprawls, re-shots and getting back to your feet, because you will be on the wrong end of it too.

04

Live goes

Short, sharp takedown-only rounds. Everyone is tired and everyone is smiling.

Questions
Do I need a wrestling background?
No. Most of the room came to wrestling through jiu-jitsu, not the other way around.
Is it hard on the body?
It is honest work, but the mats are proper mats and the coaches teach you to fall before they teach you to throw.
Will it help my jiu-jitsu?
More than almost anything else. Deciding whether the fight happens standing or on the floor is a huge advantage.
Can my kid do wrestling too?
Yes — the kids classes include takedowns and scrambles, taught at a level that suits them.
