Self-Defense

Self-defense here is not a seminar you sit through. It is grip breaks, distance management, getting off the floor and getting away — drilled under real pressure, against someone who is not cooperating, until it works when you are tired and surprised.

Who it is for

Is this you?

  • Anyone who has ever felt uneasy walking to their car
  • Parents who want their kids to have options
  • People with no interest in competing, ever
  • Anyone, at any fitness level — this is the least athletic prerequisite of anything we run

What to bring

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • A water bottle
  • No experience whatsoever
  • An open mind about how little strength this needs

What a session looks like

An hour on the mat

01

The situation

The coach sets a realistic problem — a grab, a shove, being on the ground — and explains what actually matters in it.

02

The answer

One simple response, chosen because it works when you are panicking, not because it looks impressive.

03

Pressure

Drilled against a partner who gradually stops cooperating, so you find out if it holds up.

04

Getting away

Every drill ends the same way — on your feet, moving, out of there.

Questions
Is this different from the jiu-jitsu class?
It uses the same skills but points them at getting away rather than winning an exchange. The goal is the door, not the submission.
I am not strong. Does that matter?
No — that is the entire point of jiu-jitsu. Leverage and position do the work that strength cannot.
Can women train here?
Yes, and they do. Call (321) 693-1765 and we will tell you which sessions are busiest with women training.
How long before it would actually work?
The basics start working surprisingly fast. Making them work when you are frightened takes consistent training — which is why we drill under pressure from day one.
