Why train here

A real room,not a franchise

Part of a world-class team

Brazilian Top Team was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 and produced Vitor Belfort, the Nogueira brothers and Ricardo Arona. The same association, the same curriculum, on Merritt Island.

Your first class is free

Show up, borrow a mat space, see if you like it. No sign-up, no pressure, no contract to read first.

Small classes, real coaching

Classes are deliberately kept small so instructors can give hands-on correction in the room rather than shouting at a crowd.

Family-owned and veteran-owned

Locally owned and run by the people who teach the classes. Kids and adults train under the same roof, most weeks side by side.

You are joining a teamwith a record

Brazilian Top Team was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 by Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Libório, José Mario Sperry, Luis Roberto Duarte. It grew from one academy in Rio into an association with branches all over the world. Its purpose has not changed: help people develop through jiu-jitsu and the way of thinking that comes with it.

It is led today by Master Murilo Bustamante — Jiu-Jitsu and MMA world champion, and the first Brazilian to win a UFC belt. He leads Brazilian Top Team today.

BTT Merritt Island is headed by Professor Marshall Kemper, who has been training jiu-jitsu since 2005 and joined the Brazilian Top Team family in 2008.

Belt promotions

Belts are earnedin front of everyone

Nobody gets promoted on a timetable here. When a student has put in the technique, the attitude and the mat time, they get called up in front of the whole room — and the room makes a noise about it. Kids and adults both.

Common questions

Before you stop by

Is my first class really free?
Yes. Show up, borrow a mat space, and see whether you like it. No sign-up, no contract, and nobody will chase you afterward if it is not for you.
I have never trained before. Where do I start?
The beginners' jiu-jitsu class. You will be paired with someone experienced whose job is to take care of you. Shorts and a t-shirt are all you need.
What do I need to bring?
Shorts and a t-shirt for your first month, plus a water bottle. Nails short, long hair tied back, no jewelry on the mat. Gis and gear are sold at the front desk once you decide to stay.
Do you teach children?
Yes. Kids train in their own classes, grouped by size and experience rather than age, with supervised rounds. Many parents train the adults class straight afterward.
Where exactly are you?
We are at 1450 N Courtenay Pkwy, Ste 15, Merritt Island, FL 32953, inside Fitness Club Merritt Island. Parking is on site.
Which areas do you draw students from?
All over Brevard County — Merritt Island, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Rockledge, Cape Canaveral, Port St. John, Titusville, Viera, Suntree and Melbourne.
