Coach Mike Hoats is the Co-Owner and Administrative Director of Brazilian Top Team Merritt Island. A U.S. Army Veteran who deployed to Iraq in 2003, Mike began training Jiu- Jitsu in 2007 with childhood friend and Head Coach, Marshall Kemper. Combining a competitive grappling background with professional expertise in insurance and project management, Mike manages the academy’s business operations. He also co-leads the Kids' Program alongside Coach Daryl under the tutelage of Professor Marshall Kemper. For Mike, BTT is a true family affair: his wife Helen heads social media and marketing, and two of his five sons train actively on the mats.

For Coach Daryl Chumtraruk, combat sports and teaching have been lifelong passions. Born in Bangkok, Thailand, and raised in Brevard County, Daryl grew up training in Muay Thai and boxing before finding his love for Jiu-Jitsu when his children first stepped onto the mats.

As a co-founder of Brazilian Top Team Merritt Island, Daryl brings extensive combat sports expertise and instinctive coaching to the academy. Training under Professor Marshall Kemper, he co-leads the Kids' Program alongside Coach Mike. Daryl is deeply dedicated to building high-level Jiu-Jitsu technique while mentoring the next generation to be hardworking, dedicated, and resilient both on and off the mats.

Coach David is a professional MMA fighter and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt with an extensive competitive background, having stepped into the cage for major promotions like the PFL, Combate Global, and Gamebred FC.

While his competitive resume speaks for itself, Coach David’s true passion lies in teaching. He is dedicated to introducing beginners to martial arts, developing the next generation of champions, and helping students of all experience levels grow. Whether your personal goal is fitness, confidence, self-defense, or high-level competition, Coach David focuses on building strong fundamentals, real-world skills, and maintaining a positive, welcoming training environment for everyone.

Ron Jones is a 3rd-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with 19 years of experience on the mats under Professor Edgard Dutra. A former competitive powerlifter (3rd place at the 2007 APF Senior Nationals) and a BJJ competitor of four years, Ron specializes in teaching adults of all skill levels. His classes emphasize building a rock-solid foundation through fundamentals, helping every student grow their technique, confidence, and character. BJJ is a family passion for Ron, who proudly shares his training and competition journey with his daughter, a BJJ purple belt.

For Coach Scott Wondrely, martial arts, family, and community are deeply intertwined. A foundational member of the Brazilian Top Team (BTT) since 2010, Scott earned his black belt in 2020 under Professor Edgard Dutra and has since advanced to a 3rd Degree Black Belt. Today, he is a lead instructor at BTT Merritt Island.

Jiu-Jitsu is a true family affair for the Wondrelys. Scott’s two sons are active, competitive BTT athletes who train under Professor Marshall Kemper.

Off the mats, Scott has protected the local community for 27 years with the Brevard County Fire Department, where he serves as a District Chief. He brings the core values forged in the fire service and on the mats—discipline, leadership, and teamwork—to the academy, where he is passionate about empowering the next generation of martial artists.

For Coach Shayla Jones, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lifelong family tradition. A BJJ Purple Belt under the elite Brazilian Top Team (BTT) lineage, she was introduced to the art by her father, BTT Black Belt Ron Jones. Shayla is an active and highly accomplished competitor, most recently capturing double gold at the IBJJF.

At BTT Merritt Island, Shayla brings vibrant energy to coaching the Kids’ Program and leading adult classes. Outside the academy, she is a certified personal trainer specializing in strength and conditioning. By blending fitness expertise with her grappling background, Shayla is dedicated to helping students build rock-solid technique, discipline, and lifelong physical and mental strength.
