Do I need a gi to start?
No. Shorts and a t-shirt are fine for your first month. Buy a gi once you know you are staying — there is no sense spending money before you are sure.
Sizing
Gi sizing catches everyone out the first time. Ask a coach and they will get you into the right size rather than the size you think you are.
